My Initial Thoughts on Star Wars: Rogue One

As many of you know the new trailer for Star Wars: Rogue One premiered today. As a fan of Star Wars since I was a small child I have always been fascinated by the universe and the stories it tells.

This is why I was not happy with Disney when they declared that almost all the books, and novels related to the Star Wars Expanded Universe were no longer considered canon.  How could they accept the prequels as canon, but disregard some of the amazing stories told through the talents of some amazing authors?!

However, before I start complaining, and get off on a tangent, the reason I love the promise of Rogue One is it seems to be the untold story of characters within the Star Wars universe that have nothing to do with the Jedi or the Sith.

We get to peer into the lives of members of the rebellion as they struggle and fight for a cause without the promise of “The Force” or the rebirth of The Jedi.

Further, what excites me is we may actually get to see just how scary The Empire actually is, and what it does to its citizens and captured members of The Rebellion.

This is important, and something I always felt was brushed over in the original movies. The Empire was a scary, and dangerous organization.  It showed no mercy, destroyed whole worlds, and built weapons of mass destruction that would terrorize its people.  And we get to see that world.

At least I hope we do.

What are you most excited about when it comes to the upcoming film Star Wars: Rogue One?

5 Things

It’s been a hard year.  My life has changed significantly, & as we come to the close of 2015 I am disappointed at how little I accomplished this year.  My 2015 goals were abandoned along the road side early in the year out of a sheer need to survive.

But despite this being a hard year, I am grateful for some many things.  So here are 5 things that are going right in my life right now 🙂

  1. I am listening to Christmas music.  I know this may not seem like a big deal, but I assure you it is.  Last year I didn’t celebrate Christmas.  No tree, lights, decorations, or music.  This year I was so excited to begin the Christmas holiday that I had music playing on Thanksgiving.  As I listen to some of my favorite Christmas melodies I cant help but smile, and look forward to the Christmas season.
  2. I am picking up pictures today.  Now this may not seem like a big deal to you, but this is the first set of pictures I have actually had printed in years.  When I moved to CA, and started decorating my room, I hung several cork boards. However all the photos I have are close to 10 years old.  So I went through all my phones photos, and my online cloud storage, and selected a wide assortment of photos to be printed, and eventually hung on the wall.
  3. Star Wars is coming out in less then a month.  Need I say more?
  4. Yesterday Kiri, Sydney, Ken, and myself went to Disneyland for a family day at the park, and to enjoy Seasons of the Force.  While we were there we may or may not have taken this amazing picture.12307346_10205535694657551_7140249013968207326_o
  5. But perhaps the most important thing that is going right in my life is my decision to be happy, and move forward with my life.  It’s been a hard year yes, but I am not going to let those hardships define who I am or how I behave.  I have wonderful people in my life, and great opportunities.  So I am choosing to focus on the good instead of the past.

37. 56 Kinds of Geek

Once again I must thank my Brother-in-Law Matt for sending this to me. As I look over the list and think about my life as a Geek I fall into several of these different types of Geeks.

Trek Geek
I have mentioned this before, but one of the earliest memories I have with my family is watching Star Trek: The Next Generation together. To this day I find myself a loyal Star Trek fan. In fact one of the biggest draws to Dragoncon this year is the LARGE amount of Star Trek characters coming.

Jedi Geek
Do I even need to bother with an explanation on this one. Anyone who has know me for almost any length of time knows I am an avid Star Wars fan. Most of my Geek t-shirts are Star Wars. I own every Star Wars PS3 game. I love watching the movies. If I had three wishes one would be the ability to control both sides of the force, and have my very own lightsaber.

Larper Geek
I must confess that there has been times where I have enjoyed LARPING. Through my association with The Knightly Order of the Fiat Lux I was introduced to different types of larps including Dagorhir and SOLAR

Portable Geek
I love technology and gadgets. Nuff said!

Apple Geek
Well lets see I am writing this post on my Macbook while my Iphone goes through its weekly sync, and listening to music from my Ipod classic. I have three Mac blogs bookmarked, and check Mac Rumors everyday. Does that make me an Apple Geek?

Con Geek
I dont think I am a Con Geek. I think its perfectly natural to know how many days are left till Dragoncon….96.

There are several other categories that I have spent some time in, and may in the future spend more time, but I think its safe to say I am a Geek. So the question is what kind of Geek are you?

35. What Kind Of Geek Are You?

Thanks to my Brother-In-Law Matt for sending me this comic.

A Geeks life is a classic story of becoming comfortable with themselves. Its funny that Matt sent me this particular comic, because as I looked at it I saw my own journey into becoming a Geek. As a kid some of my best memories are watching Star Trek: The Next Generation every week with my family. That eventually lead to watching X-Files each Sunday, and lets not forget there were the Star Trek Movies that my parents introduced me to. But this was never something I felt I could share with anyone at school or any other social group I found myself in. It didn’t matter if, as in the comic, someone else brought the subject up, I still felt like it was uncool to talk of such things.

As I got older and moved into High School I started feeling more comfortable talking about some of the Geek trivia I had picked up over the years, but I wanted more. I remember a class project we were all given once. The assignment was to write about a collection we had, bring in an example of something out of that collection, and give a short presentation on your collection. I don’t remember what my paper, example, or presentation was on, but I do remember one student brought in his Star Wars Action Figures. His paper and presentation talked about how he had started collecting when he was a small child. His collection ranged from out of the box figures that were either missing a limb, light saber, or blaster, to mint condition rare figure still in their display boxes.

I could tell from where I sat in the classroom that he was nervous. I don’t know if he was nervous because he was speaking in front of a crowd of his peers, or because he was speaking about something that was so clearly in the Geek category. Regardless of why he was nervous, the longer he spoke the more confident he became. I remember being very jealous of his collection, and wishing I had the money to start my own collection. It was not long after that that I started picking up geek paraphernalia.

Now fast forward to the present day, and any one of my friends will clearly tell you how I am an Uber Geek willing to not only talk about my geeky obsessions, or share books, comics, or toys from my Geek collection, I will also from time to time stray from reality and truly wonder what my life would be like if I owned a light saber and had control of the force.

I think all Geeks go through this process. I say this because as I have showed this comic to my friends they have all started laughing and commenting about how that is totally them. While each Geek may be different there is a common bond that keeps us all connected to each other.
